Get to know singer Velvin Lamont, Soul in the City Cork.
‘Velvin Lamont, with a name like that some would say he was destined for stardom’.
Velvin Lamont Is one of the very talented acts who will be performing at this year’s #SoulInTheCityCork. As you may already know the jam packed weekend festival will take place this June Bank holiday weekend in Cork and will be the music festival not to be missed.
We recently caught up with Velvin at his Cork city music gig in the Cornstore Cork where he talked about all things soul. From the moment Velvin walked in he oozed the sense of Soul. Not only from the way he was dressed but also from the way he spoke about himself and his music. Talking us through his journey from the USA to Ireland and how he built the bricks of the foundation for Soul Music in Cork. The self proclaimed ‘Son of Love’ named after his Mother Dorothy Love, having just moved here five years ago has already made a huge household name for himself amongst the Irish nation and of course amongst the Cork music scene. The LA born singer has shared the stage with artists such as acclaimed rapper Biggie Smalls, Da Brat, Jon B, Glenn Lewis and East Coast hip hop duo Nice and Smooth to name a few. Having grown up surrounded by Soul Music Lamont says that the Baptist Church Choir has influenced his style of singing as he accompanied his Mother to rehearsals as a young boy. His musical roots started in the sunny state of California. It was from there he flourished as a singer and decided to pursue his career in the music industry. However spurred on by his Irish wife, Velvin followed his heart to cork just a few years ago. Lamont shared with us that he and only a handful of other artists truly understood what soul music was when he first arrived to Cork city. He thought he may have had a tough job trying to convert the Irish audience to soul, especially when he first began playing at his Live music gigs in Cork but now he truly feels that the Irish people have welcomed him and his talent with open arms. As we finished our chat with Velvin Lamont he then took to the stage of the busy Cork restaurant. With just a guitarist by his side, Lamont needed nothing more as his blissful voice captured the attention of many. The singer could be heard throughout the restaurant with many of the audience joining in singing along to songs such as ‘just the two of us’, ‘Sunny’ and ‘my girl’.
Velvin is extremely proud of the fact that he was part of the beginning of soul music in Cork and hopes that his two sons will carry on the tradition. Lamont is excited for what Cork has to offer him as a Soul singer and feels like this is ‘only the beginning’. Velvin Lamont can be seen performing at various live music venues across Cork city each week and is a name you will be seeing (and hearing) a lot more of in the future. Join Velvin and many other talented artists at this years Soul in the City music festival this June Bank holiday weekend from June 2nd-4th 2017. Taking place in Corks historical Victorian Quarter and Live at St. Luke’s. It will be one of the top things to do in Cork during that weekend. Make sure to be a part of it.
